When to make a Hazel referral
One thing that I noticed and when it happens is when I make a Hazel Health referral. When students start requesting to see me more than ever before. When it seems to be like several times out of the week, several times out of the month when that's opposite of what they've always done, every time that happens, the first thing I do is like, let's talk about Hazel Health because I can't give them all of that time that they need. And so I always make a Hazel Health referral. It takes a lot of coaching to do because sometimes they're like, but we only want to talk to you. And so I'll say, no, don't worry. I trust the therapist at Hazel Health. So I give them that assurance that it's going be fine. No, it's not going to be me and it doesn't need to be me, but you can still trust this person to share whatever's going on with you.
Therapy wins
One student - she'd only had one Hazel Health session and then due to testing and everything we couldn't continue with the same therapist. But in that one session, the therapist gave her something to help get her through. Because she came to me and she goes "I'm just doing what my therapist said" and I said "What is that?". "She told me to think of another place I enjoy and just go there and so I was thinking of the beach and that's why I didn't fight."
Getting students on board for therapy
Your mom can say the same thing I say, but because it's coming from me, it holds so much more weight. And I know like I had to have like these conversations like, no, let me tell you how great Hazel Health is. They can be here during the school time. That has opened them up to it so much more than if your parent, if your parent says you need therapy, it's like, you're judging me for whatever issues I have. But if Ms. Frick says it, I'm okay with it.
Getting parents on board for Hazel
It's in the convincing of the kids so that I give them enough to go because they want it after we talk about it, they want it. And so they go and tend to have that conversation like, Mom, there's this free therapy, you don't have to pay for it, and I really want to use it. I don't really try to encourage parents because I really haven't had to. It's been the students to say like, once I get a student on board and they go home and tell mom, it's so much easier. Or once I get the student to agree, I will call parents like, okay, your child is requesting therapy and I'll put it back on the child. Not saying I requested it. Like Jane wants to go to therapy and I think Hazel Health would be a great fit for her. And so when you have the kids buy into it and you have me calling up and saying, yes, it's great, they're open a little bit more.
